Pharmacology is the branch of medicine and biology that focuses on the study of drugs and their effects on the human body. It examines how drugs interact with biological systems to produce therapeutic effects and how they can be used to prevent, treat, and manage diseases. Pharmacology also involves the study of how drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted by the body—this is known as pharmacokinetics—and how drugs affect the body at the molecular, cellular, and systemic levels, which is called pharmacodynamics.
